On Friday, 11 November 2005, Sedgars Park played host to a 20/20 Supersport Franchise Cup match between the NW Powerade Dragons and the Gauteng Strikers.
The Dragons won the toss and decided to bat first. This proved to be a vital decision as the Dragons put up an immense total of 176 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. Opening pair Jimmy Kgamadi and Drian Steyn didn't waste any time and the sparks started flying as soon as they got bat to ball in their 100 run opening partnership.
Man of the match, Drian Steyn, scored a lightening quick 59 runs off only 37 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 huge sixes. Jimmy Kgamadi played the anchor role for the Dragons and ended up with 63 off 58 balls, which included 6 fours and one six.
Jean le Roux came to the crease after the departure of Steyn, and played a cheeky innings of 27 runs of 13 balls, sending the fielders to the boundary 3 times and making them fetch two big sixes.
Opening bowler for the Dragons, Friedel de Wet, played a key role in the bowling attack. He started off his economic spell of 20 runs in 4 overs with a maiden and kept on applying pressure by keeping the run rate down. Wicket takers for the Dragons were Frikkie Holtzhausen taking 2 for 28 in 4 overs and Mafinkie Serami who took 1 for 27 in 3 overs.
Opener for the Strikers, Dumiso Makalima had the crowd gasping in excitement in his innings of 54 runs off 34 balls. In captain Richard Ströh's first over, Makalima made mince out of him. He hit Ströh for an unbelievable 28 runs, which included 2 fours and 3 powerful sixes, one of which sailed gracefully over the roof of the grand stand. Douglas Gain played a real captain's innings and scored his 42 off just 35 balls hitting only one four but got maximum for three of his efforts. Brendon Adams also played a vital innings for the Strikers. He scored a quick 39 off 31 which included 5 boundaries. But in the end the Strikers could only manage to score 163 for 3 in their 20 overs, coming up short by 13 runs.
By winning this match the Dragons bettered their odds of
having a chance to play in one of India's premier cricket
competitions, the inter-zonal Duleep Trophy. The Duleep Trophy
is an annual competition between five of the top zonal teams in
India, with a sixth team coming from outside India. India's
Board of Control invited Cricket SA (Pty) Ltd to send a suitable
team to compete in the league. The team picked by Cricket SA
will compete for an initial three-year period, starting with the
October 2006 tournament. Cricket South Africa's management
committee decided to accept the invitation and that the winning
franchise team in the 2005/6 Supersport Series will take part in
